Tis the season for holiday parties, which also means lots of holiday beverages, and we’ve got a tasty, new recipe for you to try!
Our friends at Captain Jefferd’s Inn in Kennebunkport were recently featured on our “Prelude” festive Happy Hour Tour and were kind enough to share their family recipe for Swedish Glogg with us. It was so delicious, we’re paying it forward and passing it on to you. This festive beverage simmers on the stovetop with mulling spices and raisins to fill your home with mouth watering aromas and, served hot, it warms the cockles of any heart. A perfect drink for entertaining your guests this winter. We encourage you to wet your whistle (repeatedly) with this one!

INGREDIENTS: Makes about five 750ml bottles
- 1.5 – liter bottle of inexpensive dry red wine
- 1.5 – liter bottle of inexpensive American port
- 750 ml bottle inexpensive brandy
- 2 cups of sugar
- 10 inches total of cinnamon sticks
- 2 teaspoons whole cardamom seeds
- 2 dozen whole cloves
- 1 orange peel, whole & washed
- 1/2 cup dark raisins
- garnish with the peel of another orange
PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Pour the red wine and port into a stainless steel or porcelain kettle. Add the cinnamon, cardamom seeds, cloves, orange peel, and raisins. Some folks also add almonds. Cover and simmer.
2. Put the sugar in a pan and soak it with half the brandy. Warm over a medium-low flame and stir occasionally until it becomes a clear, golden syrup and all the sugar is dissolved. Simmer for about 15 minutes until the tiny bubbles become large bubbles.
3. Add the sugar syrup to the spiced wine mix. Cover and let it simmer over a low heat for about an hour.
4. Remove the spices, almonds & raisins. You can serve immediately or bottle it in clean used wine or whiskey bottles. If you’ve got the patience, a month or two of aging also really enhances the flavor.
